Meet the Molecule: Hypochlorous Acid

I freaking love Hypochlorous Acid spray.

Okay, so I absolutely love my Pilates classes and going on a run or afternoon walk, but recently, I’ve been feeling like I have to choose between clear skin (all over) or a toned body. Impossible choice…I know. Every time I work out, I can just feel my pores getting clogged and my skin feeling icky. But let me introduce you to the heaven-sent molecular concoction that has not only helped my skin, but cleared my conscience of guilt after not being able to wash my face within 30 minutes of working out… queue the TikTok sound: “you know you only have 30 minutes…”

I’ve been working with my esthetician for a while now, and she told me she sprays this stuff on herself all the time. Okay… this stuff must be legit. So, what exactly does it do?

Hypochlorous acid can help with a whole host of things: bug bites, eczema, sunburns, and you guessed it, acne! Unlike typical alcohol-based or benzoyl peroxide products, this form of acid is much gentler, making it a non-toxic, non-drying solution for just about anyone. They literally give it to you after you get your ears pierced at Claire’s as the “aftercare” solution (so yes, you’re definitely familiar with it).

The benefits? It’s antimicrobial, meaning it eliminates bacteria, viruses, and fungi on the skin without destroying your microbiome. It also helps soothe redness and calm irritation. Basically, this spray mimics white blood cells, known for fighting infections and promoting healing, in the most convenient, topical form.

So spray it before and after a plane ride, a workout, in the middle of your workday, after the beach…literally anytime. The only thing to watch out for is mixing it with harsh exfoliants or alcohol-based products, since that might make your skin a little extra dry.

Blemish Babe Tip: Don’t feel pressured to fall for the marketing traps of some hypochlorous acid sprays. You don’t need anything with weird, fancy ingredients, and while I do love the Tower28 SOS spray, you can literally find a simple version at Walmart.
